Cruise & Ferry Review - Spring/Summer 2024

33 Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards is to build and supply four passenger/car ferries to BC Ferries in Canada. The vessels will be fully electric and will provide short-range services around British Columbia. Each ferry will be capable of carrying up to 47 vehicles and 390 passengers and will be based on Damen’s double-ended Island-class RoRo 8117 E3 model. The ferries are scheduled to begin operations by 2027. Two vessels are expected to serve the Nanaimo Harbour and Gabriola Island route, while the other two will operate on the route connecting Campbell River and Quadra Island. The new Yankee Freedom IV will provide services on the 70-mile route between Key West in Florida and the Dry Tortugas National Park once it has been delivered in 2026. Yankee Freedom IV’s main deck will accommodate up to 130 passengers. There will be a covered area outside on the aft main deck, a viewing area on the bow and seating for over 170 passengers on the second and upper decks. Orkney Ferries has implemented Hogia Ferry Systems’ Bookit reservation and ticketing system. The Bookit system will streamline the booking and checkin processes for passengers using services provided by the operator’s 10 vessels, which offer more than 20,000 annual departures to 13 islands within Scotland’s Orkney archipelago. “The new system will allow us as a company to make improvements to the way we manage our deck space, which will of course have knock-on benefits to our customers,” said Eddie Barclay, service manager at Orkney Ferries.
