Mersin in Turkey is an important port tourism city on the East Mediterranean coast and has been inhabited by many different civilisations since the Prehistorical Period. The nearby Mamure Castle is believed to have been first built by the Romans either in the third or the fourth century and was later enlarged and used by the Byzantine Empire and the Crusaders. The castle was then captured and repaired several times by the Seljuks, Karamanids and Ottoman Empire, and its fortifications provide an outstanding example of the styles of the many civilisations which have occupied it over its 1,500 years of existence. The French state entrusted Auguste Perret, one of the greatest architects of his time, with the reconstruction of the town centre, which became one of the largest urban reconstruction works in Europe after the war. In 2005, this earned Le Havre its place among the very rare contemporary urban centres to be listed as World Heritage sites by Unesco. Among the highlights of the city are Saint- Joseph Church, the city hall, the historic show flat and a walk in the Avenue Foch, which opens the city to the sea through the Ocean Gate.
