2 5 The dramatic landscape of Rio de Janiero in Brazil is punctuated by a series of forested mountains that tower over the city, rising to the uppermost peak of the Tijuca massif at 1,021 metres high. The site consists of an exceptional urban setting encompassing the key natural elements that have shaped and inspired the development of the city. They also include the botanical bardens established in 1808, Corcovado Mountain with its celebrated statue of Christ, and the hills around Guanabara Bay, including the extensive designed landscapes along Copacabana Bay. The first stone was laid in 1492 in a project led by engineer and architect Pere Compte, at a time when the city was one of the main commercial ports of the Mediterranean. Eight twisted columns support the dramatic vaulted ceiling of the Sala de Contratacion, intended to appear like palm trees holding up the heavens. The Consulado del Mar was the home of the first marine merchant tribunal to be formed in Spain, with the Torreón used as a prison for those who reneged on their debts. Valencia La Lonja de la Seda de Valencia The Kluane/Wrangell-St. Elias/Glacier Bay/ Tatshenshini-Alsek site in Alaska contains the largest non-polar icefield in the world, as well as examples of some of the world’s longest and most spectacular glaciers. The parks demonstrate some of the best examples of glaciation and modification of landscape by glacial action, producing beautiful natural sights. The spectacular landscapes span from the northern interior to coastal climates and possesses a high level of biodiversity, including many grizzly bears, caribou and Dall’s sheep.
