The Ship Of The Future - an industry celebration

[ 135 ] OPTIMISED MANOEUVRING The Fusion-class has been specifically designed to deliver optimal manoeuvring with a hullform optimised for as much efficiency as possible when sailing in both directions. ABB Azipods or azimuth thrusters enable the ship to move in any direction and comprise a configuration of marine propellers placed in pods that can be rotated to any horizontal angle, rendering a rudder unnecessary. ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM (ESS) The hybrid propulsion system includes an Energy Storage System with a total of 1,160 batteries stored in four dedicated battery rooms. Such an ESS helps to cut fuel costs and emissions, also reducing maintenance. As the Fusion-class is hybrid, the ESS helps to optimise the energy consumption by running the engines at optimal load and storing excess energy for later use. The ESS is used for the following operations: ❱ Peak shaving — ‘shaving’ the load peaks and operate engines at more optimum load ❱ Load levelling — giving the generators a smoother operation by reducing load variations ❱ Spinning reserve — taking a generator set offline and using ESS for reserve power ❱ Zero-emission and silent sailing — taking engines offline, burning no fuel, emitting no exhaust and making no noise. As battery technology continuously improves, the generators might be replaced by batteries, making the Fusion-class fully electric. LESS POWER — SAME SCHEDULE With the use of azimuth thrusters and an optimised hull, the amount of propulsion power required by the ships is 12.7MW based on three roundtrips in 13.5 hours and 21.6MW based on three roundtrips in 12 hours. WASTE HEAT RECOVERY UNIT (WHRU) This is a system designed to retrieve surplus heat from the heated low-temperature freshwater cooling system, including generator sets, by heat pump. The retrieved heat is used to heat the water of the central heating system, the heated water to be used for HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system preheating, domestic hot water and machinery rooms and technical “ As battery technology continuously improves, the generators might be replaced by batteries, making the Fusion-class fully electric” LEGACY
