The Ship Of The Future - an industry celebration

[ 41 ] SHIPBUILDING THE ABB WAY FORWARD The game-changing P&O Pioneer and P&O Liberté boast an array of electric, automated and digital solutions from the ABB stable: ❱ Integrated Automation System: Thanks to ABB Ability™ 800xA Integrated Automation System, the crew can enjoy a fully integrated ship where all systems and equipment work seamlessly together, operated from a single-user environment. P&O Ferries’ Fusion-class comes with ABB’s latest generation Integrated Automation System, providing a modern user interface that excels in userfriendliness and consistency. ❱ Electrical Power Plant: a 6.6kV power plant including switchboards, transformers, energy storage integration and generators. ❱ Azipod® Propulsion: four Azipod® DO1600 units rated at 7.5MW each. Azipod® D for open water is a second-generation compact-size Azipod® propulsion series covering a power range from 1MW to 7.5MW. It is the most efficient azimuthing propulsor in its power range and has excellent course-keeping characteristics. Based on its gearless construction and high performance, Azipod® DO provides costefficient, reliable and energy-saving operations for cruise, ferry, offshore and special vessels. The high performance of the thruster is achieved by a unique hybrid cooling of the propulsion motor, combining direct cooling to the surrounding sea water and an active air-cooling system. ❱ Energy Storage: an 8.8MWh Energy Storage Solution, including AC/DC convertors, transformers and battery hardware from Freudenberg/XALT Energy. ABB’s Energy storage system is a modular battery power supply developed for marine use. It is applicable to high and low voltage, AC and DC power systems, and can be combined with a variety of energy sources such as diesel or gas engines and fuel cells. The system can be integrated as an all-electric or a hybrid power system. ❱ Power and Energy Management System: ABB’s Power and Energy Management System (PEMSTM) is the core of a vessel’s combined power and control system. It ensures optimal use of the vessel’s total power resources in a safe, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly manner. The PEMS™ is closely integrated with the electrical system by use of high-speed digital communication within ABB’s switchboards, protection devices and controllers. This simplifies the information flow between the switchboard and the PEMS™, giving the end-user full control. Where energy storage solutions or other alternative power sources are installed onboard, engine loading is optimised to suit. ❱ Remote Control System: ABB AbilityTM Marine Pilot Control represents a new way to control a vessel during all operational modes, including manoeuvring, transit, and position-keeping. Designed for today’s operations and potential future modes, the system enables optimal and complete all-speed vessel control from one operator position, using only one joystick and touchscreen. ❱ Remote Diagnostic System: Smart Asset Management through ABB AbilityTM Remote Diagnostic System for Marine. The ABB Ability™ Remote Diagnostic System for Marine (RDS) is a diagnostic tool and data hub that provides troubleshooting and condition monitoring solutions for electrical and mechanical systems, enabling fast and accurate remote support. As a result, lower maintenance costs and higher operational availability are achieved, while simultaneously increasing vessel and crew safety and reducing the CO2 footprint. The core of the system is a dedicated monitoring and diagnostics platform for collection, storage and analysis of data from individual components, subsystems and complete integrated solutions. To address the individual needs of each vessel, the RDS system is completely modular. Additional services can be added. ❱ Vessel Advisory: ABB Ability™ OCTOPUS — Marine Advisory System is a unique product family for performance management in marine operations. Through various deployment methods, fuel consumption and emissions are reduced by guiding crew decisions quickly. Availability and safety of the ship are measured and protected too. Fleet visibility is achieved through secure data transfer for broader analysis by shoreside specialists in the office. ❱ Shore Connection: Both ships are delivered with electrical and automation systems primed to receive shore connection when it is available in the ports of Dover and Calais.
