[ 55 ] DEEPLY ROOTED IN THE TRADITION OF NORDIC DESIGN In mid-2023, OSK Group became OSK Design. As part of the company’s holistic approach, the respective branches now all use the single OSK Design brand name. The interior design practice was known as Steen Friis Design, being named after its late founder, the Dane Steen Friis Hansen. A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen Friis Hansen started his shipboard interior design career under the wing of veteran ship interior designer Claus Horn in 1991. When Horn retired in 1998, Friis Hansen decided to trade on his own and established Steen Friis Design. Compatriot DFDS was an early customer as was Stena, and the one-man company quickly grew into a fully-fledged design studio. Steen Friis Design became a household word in shipboard interior design as Norfolkline’s three D-class Dover– Dunkerque ro-pax ferries with their beautiful and spacious saloons were fine examples of the best that Danish ship interior design could offer. To offer its customers a one-stopshop, OSK-ShipTech (now OSK Design) took over Steen Friis Design in April 2016. Its portfolio included Global Mercy, the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, and two ropax ferries under construction at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) for Sweden’s Rederi AB Gotland. Steen Friis Hansen no longer had an active role in the company when he sadly passed way at the age of 59 in late 2020. SHIPBUILDING
